MARITSA PLATIS RECEIVES A MAYORAL PROCLAMATION AND A CEREMONIAL KEY TO THE CITY

During the June 7 special called City Council meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley presented North Myrtle Beach resident Maritsa Platis with a Proclamation and a ceremonial key to the City.

Maritsa is a sophomore at the University of South Carolina studying public health with a concentration in pre-med. She aspires to pursue a career as a Neonatologist, working for infants in neonatal intensive care units, and personally advocating for enhancing infant asphyxia awareness in the United States.

In June 2020, Maritsa earned the national title of Miss U.S. International. She is the first woman from South Carolina to win the title and she employs it to affect change through the organization’s core values of love, peace, and unity on a global scale. For example, Maritsa started an initiative, Cradle of Love, educating and informing new parents of the dangers of co-sleeping with infants, and partnering with hospitals to raise funds to provide bassinets to those who need them.

In the fall of 2021, in Tokyo, Japan, Maritsa will compete among contestants from 80 countries for the title of Miss International.

Through the Miss International Pageant, Maritsa plans to elevate her voice by standing with numerous nonprofits and organizations that align with the international organization’s mission.

As a first-generation American, Maritsa has a strong Greek heritage and strong family ties that she credits with having helped shape her into the person she is today.

Mayor Hatley congratulated Maritsa on her good character and many achievements, and commended her for the positive example she offers as a citizen of North Myrtle Beach, as a representative of South Carolina, and as an emerging leader, spokesmodel, and philanthropist in the international community.
